Training 2003
February
2003.
Held in Coire Na Cadha, below Sgurr an Fhuarail and Aonach Meadhoin
at the eastern end of the "Three Brothers".
We took advantage
of the good snow cover to practice ice-axe braking and snow belays of
varying types. Jamie Kean tested the latest version of his "Live
Man" snow anchor with encouraging results. The team then took advantage
of the good weather to climb up to the summit of Aonach Meadhoin.
We descended
the ridge to the west of the coire and investigated a huge avalanche
site. It was one of the biggest we have seen in the area and a potent
reminder of the dangers inherent in winter walking in Scotland.

March
2003. A joint exercise with the Coastguard and the Kyle Lifeboat.
The object was to find the best methods for rescuing a casualty who
had fallen from the bridge or had a boating accident and had managed
to clamber on to one of the bridge caissons. The exercise proved of
great benefit to all the emergency services involved. Team members also
had an opportunity to abseil from the bridge into the Kyle Lifeboat:
an experience not missed by anyone!
