Mountain Aid inherits the mantle of Boots Across Scotland which, until 2008, was a charitable trust fund supporting injured hillgoers and promoting mountain safety. Like 'Boots', one of the principal objectives of Mountain Aid is the support of mountain rescue.

The Order of St John has funded projects to develop mountain rescue base facilities and to provide vehicles. "The Mission of the Order of St. John is to prevent and relieve sickness and injury and to act to enhance the health and well-being of people of all races and creeds anywhere in the world."
